About the PM&R Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE)

The PM&R Standardized Letter of Evaluation was created by the AAP Resident Recruitment Subcouncil and approved for use by the AAP Board of Trustees. It is intended for use by residency program director to comprehensively evaluate an applicant’s readiness to enter residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

AAP's Residency & Fellowship Program Directors (RFPD) Council strongly encourages the use of the SLOE for the 2025-26 application cycle.

Data contained in the SLOE will be de-identified and collected by the AAP for continuous assessment of the quality and utility of use. This process mirrors those from other specialties using SLOEs, in order to better understand trends in graduate medical education and recruitment outcomes.

The AAP does not use or disclose personally identifiable information contained in the SLOE or disclose the SLOE to any third-party. The AAP does not review the content of any SLOE completed by a letter writer. The AAP takes reasonable steps to protect the confidentiality of the completed SLOE, including physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards as required by law.

Comprehensive Assesssment

The PM&R SLOE was authored by program director, program coordinator, resident, and medical student members of the of the AAP Resident Recruitment Subcouncil. It was developed to be concise, standardized, and discriminating, according to expectations for professionalism, medical knowledge, and readiness for patient care expected of PM&R interns (PGY-1s).

Transparency

The PM&R SLOE contains comparative, subjective, and narrative elements. Evaluators should not hesitate to use the entirety of a given scale to accurately describe the capabilities and traits of an applicant. Data obtained from PM&R SLOEs will be utilized in research to improve the PM&R SLOE’s content and effectiveness for future recruitment cycles.
