Training Resources & Opportunities for Medical Students

AAMC Resources:  Choices - The Careers in Medicine Newsletter

Choosing a medical specialty is one of the most significant decisions a medical student will make. So the AAMC created Careers in Medicine® (CiM), a career-planning program to help medical students.  Click here to visit the Careers in Medicine® (CiM) homepage.

Rehabilitation Research Experience for Medical Students (RREMS)

RREMS has been developed for medical students with strong research interests. This program provides an exciting and structured research experience while exposing the medical student to some of the most successful and respected faculty mentors in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  RREMS is an eight-week summer externship offered to medical students between the first and second year of medical school with an attached stipend of $4,000.  Click here for RREMS details and application instructions.

Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship (MSSCE)

MSSCE has been developed for medical students with a strong desire for clinical experience in the field of PM&R and who are eagerly seeking opportunities to see patients.  This program aims to provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinical exposure and to allow students to explore the human side of patient care and the psychosocial environments their patients face.  Click here for MSSCE details and application instructions.

The Electrode Store Best Paper Competition

The AAP holds an annual best paper competition sponsored by The Electrode Store.  There is a category for residents, fellows, faculty and medical students. The winner receives a complimentary Annual Meeting registration, a monetary award and the opportunity to present their work at a plenary session during the AAP Annual Meeting. Details and application instructions are posted in the Spring AAP Call for Papers and Posters.

National PM&R Clerkship Listings

The AAP maintains a list of national PM&R Clerkships.  Click here to access the listings.

PM&R Student Mentor Program

AAPM&R has set up a mechanism by which medical students, medical school interest groups, and medical schools can receive input from PM&R physicians in the community. This includes a presence at medical schools that do not have an in-house Physiatry Department or associated residency.  Click here for details.

The Medical Student Interest Group Guidebook

The AAP Residents/Fellows Council (RFC) developed a Student Interest Group Guideline with the goal of making the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation more recognizable to medical students.

James Wyss, MD, PT, Steve Yoon, MD and Jiaxin Tran, MD, Past members of the RFC

Access the guideline here:  "Medical Student Interest Group Guidebook”.

Thanks to James Wyss, MD, PT, Dr. Steve Yoon, and Dr. Jiaxin Tran, past RFC members, for their hard work on this document.

The Medical Student Interest Group Newsletter

The AAP Residents/Fellows Council (RFC) developed a Student Interest Group Newsletter with the purposes including: to introduce students to PM&R, to allow the sharing of ideas for enhancing existing SIGs (such as workshops, lectures and volunteer activities), to inspire students to start a SIG at their own medical institution, and to encourage PM&R departments to reach out to their affiliated medical schools and SIGs.
