Program for Academic Leadership

Generously sponsored by the Roosevelt Warm Springs Foundation, the AAP offers the Program for Academic Leadership (PAL). Led by Gary S. Clark, MD, CPE, MMM, PAL is a 3 year program to develop academic leadership skills in junior PM&R faculty. The goal of PAL is to provide a basic framework and skill set to promising physiatric faculty in order to enhance their leadership abilities within a department, medical school, and the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at large. This program requires candidates to attend the PAL course during each of three consecutive AAP Annual Meetings. Over the 3 years, the content covers department administration, teaching and education, and research. Applications for PAL are due in September each year.

Volunteer Opportunities

AAP offers members a variety of opportunities to become involved with advancing the specialty of PM&R on a national level:

  • Board of Trustees and Committee volunteer opportunities become available bi-annually in conjunction with the rotation policy, or as vacancies occur. The AAP will open for new applications Spring 2015.
  • The Resident / Fellow Council offers a number of leadership positions for in-training physiatrists. Applications are solicited in December and elections take place at the AAP Annual Meeting.
  • Micro Volunteer are available throughout the year. Micro volunteers participate in volunteer tasks that can be competed quickly, without a repeated commitment.


Mentorship Programs

AAP offers mentorship programs to provide members a variety of opportunities to share your knowledge, experience, skills, and perspective with other members of AAP and assists AAP members develop academic skills as they grow in their professional lives.
