The Association of Academic Physiatrists, under the leadership of William L. Bockenek, MD, CPE, is sponsoring the Program for Academic Leadership (PAL), a three-year program to develop academic leadership skills in junior PM&R faculty. The goal of PAL is to provide a basic administrative framework and skill set to promising physiatric academic faculty to enhance their leadership abilities within a Department, Medical School, and the field of PM&R at large. The number of participants will be limited to provide maximum interaction with course instructors. Over the three years, the content will cover department administration, teaching and education, and research.

PAL Tuition & Costs

  1. Participants will be responsible for airfare and hotel accommodations.
  2. Starting in 2018, the fee schedule to participate in PAL is $1,000 per year ($3,000 for three years). The yearly fee includes:
  • Registration to PAL workshops (full three days) each year including speakers, materials and networking events
  • Registration to the AAP Annual Meeting each year including plenary sessions, materials and networking events (President's Reception, coffee breaks, signature lunch, Poster Gallery receptions, Fellowship & Job Fair)
  • Access to external mentors throughout each of the three years to help with quality improvement projects that greatly benefit the participant's home institution and other career development questions and challenges
  • Online and virtual experiences with peer groups and PAL mentors

Candidates for the program will

  1. Be members of the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP),
  2. Be full-time faculty members at an Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor Level,
  3. Have a minimum of 2 years but not more than 8 years experience post residency/fellowship at the time of application,
  4. Have demonstrated the desire and ability to assume a leadership role in their Department, Medical School, or in the field of rehabilitation medicine.
  5. Attend the PAL course during each of three consecutive AAP Annual Meetings.

Submission Requirements

  1. Candidates must be nominated by their academic department or division chair. If the institution has no PM&R department or formal division, then a nomination from a member of the AAP Board of Trustees or AAP Committee Chair will suffice. The nomination letter (1 to 2 pages) should discuss the candidate’s past achievements, current academic activities and potential for future academic success. Applications will not be considered without this nomination letter.
  2. Candidate's current Curriculum Vitae.
  3. A personal statement of approximately 500 words confirming the candidate’s academic career goals and desire to participate in this program.
