Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship (MSSCE)

Recommendations for Creating a Strong MSSCE Application

  • Review the full list of sponsor sites: Please take the time to review the full list of sponsor sites and visit their websites to get more information about the different PM&R departments. All of the listed sponsor sites would provide an outstanding summer experience. Keep in mind that space is limited and most can only host one student.
  • A successful application: The students who submit a successful application Include a compelling personal statement, have a record of leadership and commitment demonstrated on their CV, strong letters of recommendation and strong MCAT scores and undergraduate grades.
  • Letters of recommendation: The letter of recommendation should be from someone who knows you well and can speak to your strengths, your leadership ability, your involvement in PM&R or other areas you feel make you a good candidate. Ask the person who will write you the strongest letter of recommendation and increase the quality of your application. This can be someone at your current school, previous school or a previous internship. It should not be the mentor you hope to work with over the summer unless you have a previous relationship with them through a class or internship.
  • Commitment of the student: The personal statement affords the opportunity to highlight your interest in physical medicine and rehabilitation and show the reviewers why acceptance into the program will lead to your academic development.
