South Carolina Becomes the 49th State to Enact a Concussion Law

On June 4, the South Carolina governor ratified H 3061, a concussion bill heavily advocated by state and national stakeholders. The new law creates educational awareness and protocols concerning head injuries in student athletes, including nationally recognized guidelines and procedures regarding the identification and management of suspected concussions in student athletes. The law also specifies which health care providers may make an initial assessment of an athlete suspected of a concussion and requires that any final return-to-play decision must be made in writing by a physician.
