Wednesday, April 23, 2014 - The MetroHealth System Appoints Dr. John Chae to Chairperson of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

(Cleveland) - The MetroHealth System appoints John Chae, MD, as the new Chairperson of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Chae joined the medical staff at MetroHealth in 1994, and was serving as the Interim Chair since August 2013.

Dr. Chae pioneered the development of percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation for the treatment of post-stroke shoulder pain (PSSP), currently considered the only intervention for PSSP with long-term treatment effect. Publications describing the intervention have received numerous awards. He has authored 84 peer reviewed publications, 13 book chapters and is Associate Editor of the premier PM&R textbook in the field.

In addition, Dr. Chae was awarded the Braddom Research Award in 2007, which “recognizes an individual who, over the previous decade, has conducted research that has had the most significant impact on the science and practice of PM&R.” His team is currently evaluating the effectiveness of this intervention for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain for non-neurologically impaired conditions such as shoulder pain and low back pain.

Dr. Chae has chaired several National Institutes for Health (NIH) panels, including the Function, Integration and Rehabilitation Sciences Subcommittee Review Panel and the Blue Ribbon Panel for Rehabilitation Research at the NIH. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Association of Academic Physiatrists (President in 2018) and the Board of Scientific Counselors for the NIH Clinical Center.

In 2011, Dr. Chae was elected into the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies as one of its youngest members, and as one of only a handful of physiatrists nationally to be recognized.

Dr. Chae received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Duke University and a master’s degree in engineering from Dartmouth College. He earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School.
