PM&R Medical Student Fair Lessons Learned

Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine PM&R Fair Overview

  • 70 students attended the 3-hour PM&R Fair hosted by the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine in Hempstead, NY
  • Participants rotated through 12 stations, with 15 minutes allotted at each station
  • Stations were led by residents, faculty physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, certified orthotists, and a licensed acupuncturist from Northwell Health and Nassau University Medical Center. All stations encouraged hands-on participation from students.

Lessons Learned

  1. Start advertising early. Two weeks before our event, we had only 20 registered students. Utilize the AAP, local PM&R organizations, and class Facebook groups to disseminate the information.
  2. Try to choose a date that encourages attendance (i.e. no tests on the next Monday).
  3. Student participation may require a waiver, even for something as small as using a wheelchair. This process can take weeks for the University to approve, so planning ahead is crucial. Only resident volunteers were able to model for acupuncture and EMG because of legal issues.
  4. Secure volunteers early and ensure they have a game plan that encourages participation and less lecturing - the least favorite stations all had the same feedback of too much “lecturing” despite interesting station content.
