The NIH Common Fund is exploring research needs and opportunities related to the molecular mechanisms whereby physical activity prevents disease and improves health outcomes. The purpose of this effort is to identify potential next steps for moving the entire biomedical research enterprise forward in this area.

This activity is undertaken with the leadership of the NIH Institute Directors Richard Hodes, MD, National Institute on Aging (NIA), Stephen I. Katz, MD, PhD, National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), and Griffin Rodgers, MD, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and with broad support throughout the NIH.

A critical component of this process is to obtain input from the scientific community. To this end, the NIH has issued a Request for Information (RFI) which was released Friday to the wider scientific community (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-RM-14-001.html).
