Watch for Course Content from the ORI Conference held October, 2006, in collaboration with the AAMC.An Enduring Multidisciplinary Curriculum for Responsible Conduct of Rehabilitation ResearchEXECUTIVE SUMMARY The RCR Program for Academic Societies to Promote Research Integrity Grant was awarded to the Association of Academic Physiatrists to create an enduring curriculum content for teaching ethical research. The goal of this initiative was to develop a set of training resources focused on the elements of Responsible Conduct of Research specific to rehabilitation research, while placing them in the larger context of a general framework on RCR. This project was created to increase the availability of a consistent training RCR curriculum; increase knowledge of RCR issue; and the ability to have a set of core materials that can be further enhanced overtime as the field of PM&R matures. The Steering Committee organized a course that consisted of 4 hours of educational contact time and 2 hours of discussion sessions. The feedback from the course was very positive. The course participants enjoyed the discussion sessions in particular. It gave participants opportunities to ask probing questions and discuss topics important to their disciplines. Results of completed evaluation surveys indicated the need for more of this type of curriculum across research disciplines. Currently in progress is the preparation of a DVD of the course content, speakers, slides, and case scenarios. The completed DVD will be distributed to PM&R training programs across the United States, with some material posted on the AAP website. Completion is anticipated for February, 2007. We anticipate that this material will enhance the capacity of these departments and programs to build on and update these resources in the future, thereby maintaining a sustained culture of RCR. Follow up over the next year will evaluate the effectiveness of the DVD. The expected outcomes of this project are ongoing. We hope to implement other mechanisms to ensure ongoing organizational attention to issues related to RCR in rehabilitation, and to make a syllabus on RCR which is specifically tailored to the needs of rehabilitation researchers readily available, and to promote awareness over the period from 2006 to 2007. |
