Update on CME Credit OpportunitiesContinuing Medical Education credits are offered by participating in the following AAP educational activities: (updated November, 2006)
The American Medical Association CME Advisory Committee (CMEAC) approved several recommendations that were then reviewed and approved by the AMA Council on Medical Education. (posted March, 2000) AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM is now authorized for the following activities:
The description of credit for a lecture presentation will read as follows: "Two AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM hours for preparation and presentation of unique lecture material designated for category 1 credit by an accredited sponsor, to a maximum of 10 credits per year. A program or announcement of an activity will be acceptable as proof of lecture." This action is significant because for the first time physicians may claim category 1 credit for self-directed leaning, which previously qualified for category 2 credit only. Reprinted from the Almanac, the newsletter of the Alliance for CME. CME Mission Statement The Continuing Medical Education (CME) mission of the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) is to improve the quality of teaching and research in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) in order to enhance the ability of physiatrists to provide quality care for patients. The organization acts as a sounding board and forum for the exchange of ideas and information relative to all phases of the art and science of PM&R and provides information to practitioners and to future physicians. The Association also encourages the exchange of information with other fields of medicine. This CME mission mirrors the overall mission of the AAP, which is "to promote excellence in education, research, and the practice of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation within the academic arena." The scope of the Continuing Medical Education effort encompasses selected educational activities described as follows. An annual meeting offers in-depth courses focusing on issues pertinent to academic physiatry in research, education and administration. Courses utilize a variety of learning strategies including lectures, workshops, seminars, and plenary sessions. This several day conference features scientific paper and poster presentations and educational programs offered by the AAP councils of Residency Program Directors, Department Chairpersons, and Research Directors. From time to time additional one to two day courses are offered to meet specific educational needs of the membership. The Association further carries out its Continuing Medical Education effort by offering learning opportunities through materials published in the American Journal of PM&R. The official journal of the Association publishes peer-reviewed articles covering all phases of PM&R. The goal of the Journal is to publish papers with exemplary design and methodology that provide useful information on all aspects of the field of PM&R to its readership of academic physiatrists and others. It is intended that readers of the journal will obtain the most up-to-date information on clinical issues to benefit PM&R physicians and their patients. The primary target audience for the educational activities of the AAP is academic physiatrists. Others, such as nonacademic physiatrists and nonphysiatrists who work in the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation are also invited to participate. The expected result of the CME activities is the noted positive impact on professional development by participants. Results are measured through participant feedback at the time of the activity, six month follow up evaluations, and member surveys. Committees and councils are queried regarding educational needs. Feedback from the journal concerning topics, reader satisfaction, and reviewer performance is utilized. |
