Message from the AAP Program Chair

kaelinMy Dear Colleagues,

Now that our summer vacations are over and a new academic year has begun, I want you to start thinking about your plans for Spring Break. That's right! Head to the beautiful Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa in Bonita Springs, Florida, April 6-10, for the 2010 AAP Annual Meeting. For details on hotel accommodations, please click here.

For the Program Committee, it's never too early to begin designing courses that will meet the needs and interests of our membership.

This year, the Keynote Address will be given by Dr. Darrell G. Kirch, the CEO and president of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Kirch will discuss the role of physiatry in medical school curriculum and its opportunity for growth in the current healthcare environment.

As in the past, there will be three primary courses: Course A will address "The Changing Face of Academic Medicine." Topics in Course A will include the physiatrist as a leader, departmental financial success, quality measurements, and fulfilling the academic mission. Course B, “Road to Recovery After Combat Polytrauma: Reintegration, Rating, and Restitution” will highlight combat-related injuries, their rehabilitation, and the development of appropriate impairment ratings and restitution. Comparisons to and implications for the current non-military methods of evaluation will be examined in this course. Course C, “The Skeletal Muscle: Foundation of Movement, Function, and Exercise,” will involve topics surrounding the function, pathophysiology and rehabilitation of the organ system that PM&R owns - Muscle.

This year's Annual Meeting promises to be an exciting and educational experience. As always, there will be workshops for the Program Coordinators, the Residents and Fellows, and the Residency & Fellowship Program Directors. The Chairpersons, Medical Student Clerkship Directors, and Research Councils will hold their regular meetings and dinners. The Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program (RMSTP) and the Program for Academic Leadership (PAL) will run concurrently with the meeting. Our distinguished list of speakers will make the 2010 Annual Meeting one of the best yet. As you read this, abstracts for paper and poster presentations are flooding in, so there will be plenty to see and do both inside and outside.

The 2010 AAP Annual Meeting program and location offer something for everyone. On behalf of AAP President, Kris Ragnarsson, MD, and the entire Program Committee, I invite you to join us in sunny Florida. As the wave of excitement builds, grab your surf board and hang on. I look forward to seeing you there.

All the best,

Darryl L. Kaelin, MD
Chair, Program Committee

INTERNATIONAL ATTENDEES

Letter of Invitation (for a US Visa)
Though some countries have visa waivers from the U.S., travelers from other countries may need a letter of invitation to the AAP Annual Meeting in order to obtain a U.S. visa. Click here for a letter of invitation.

When to Apply for a Visa
While many visas may be obtained in 30 days, others take considerably longer. We recommend submitting visa applications as early as possible to ensure your Annual Meeting participation.

The Department of State’s recommended first source of up-to-date visa information is their Web site at www.travel.state.gov. You may want to contact the Embassy Consular Section to determine visa-processing timeframes. Look for posted timeframes on the Internet or call the Consular Section to hear recorded information about visa processing timeframes. Based on processing timeframes, it is critical that travelers submit the Nonimmigrant Visa Application (Form DS-156) and all required documentation promptly.
